    Clapped in Stocks

In medieval times offenders were often clapped in stocks with legs imprisoned while they were subject to taunts, rotten eggs and various other village amusements of the times. Named after a village near Blenheim in Oxfordshire by original settler Arthur Townsend, the property now is occupied by Scott Collett's Woodstock Wines. His father Doug established the winery in McLaren Flat in 1974. The Woodstock The Stocks Shiraz 2006 is made from single vineyard fruit from century old vines. It's a riot of rich and ripe fruit with explosive full-on flavors of blackberry, dark plum and chocmints, all balanced and well integrated with oak.

  • James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion 2013

Crimson-purple; produced from 31 rows of low-yielding vines planted circa 1900; the wine has that perfumed polish that comes from very old vines, the fruit flavours deep and dark, yet the tannins and extract fine. Astute winemaking has largely left the grapes to speak for themselves.

If you have a cellar or a cool place to keep your premium reds, stock the Stocks. Named for the stocks in which medieval lawbreakers in the Oxfordshire town Woodstock were incarcerated, the Woodstock The Stocks Shiraz 2008 is sourced from 30 rows of century-plus old vines at Woodstock’s McLaren Flat vineyards. The nose reveals earth, chocmint and cedary oak while the palate opens with loads of dark berry fruits leading to a lingering mouthfeel and silken tannins. Now or in a decade.

Woodstock's single vineyard flagship wine, "The Stocks" is named after a set of medieval wooden leg stocks which still stand in the town of Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England.

The Shiraz fruit comes from 31 rows of low-yielding north facing century old vines planted on sandy soils at Woodstock Estate. Each ancient vine only yields about three bottles of "The Stocks" per year.

This wine expresses the vineyard's unique terroir year after year.

The 2006 vintage was a classic for McLaren Vale, with ideal conditions for rich, generous wines. Each vine was manicured to ensure the grapes ripened evenly, and only the finest barrels were chosen for this flagship wine, Woodstock "The Stocks" Shiraz.
