With aromas of savoury spice and black cherries this wine is bursting full of flavour. Hints of mulberries and plums add to the rich middle palate of chocolate and the underlying warmth of oak. Fine tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon provide backbone and structure while fleshy Shiraz enriches the body.
Both varieties combine with elegance and savoury length.
Delicious served with lamb.
Scott Collet’s Woodstock winery in McLaren Vale is one of the most impressive wine estates in Australia. This wine reflects Scott’s ebullient character – butch, rich, a little bit wicked, extremely naughty but ultimately a bit of a blockbuster!
World Food Wine -: Perfect with steak (not Scott)!
Fruit for this wine is sourced from the estate as well as neighbouring vineyards in McLaren Vale. Maturation for around 12 months in a combination of 2 and 3 year old seasoned French and American oak enhances the subtle complexity without the dominance of oak.
The Wine: 2010 vintage was great for rich McLaren Vale reds. Aromas of savoury spice and black cherries followed by subtle hints of fennel and mint pervades. Bursts of mulberries and plums add to the rich middle palate of chocolate, and the underlying warmth of oak. Fine tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon provide backbone and structure while fleshy Shiraz enriches the body. Both varieties combine with elegance and savoury length. Cellaring for three to five years will result in a softer palate and more complex flavours.

Faintly turbid red-purple; the percentage contribution of the two varieties is not disclosed, shiraz must necessarily be in the lead, contributing its blackberry to the blackcurrant of the cabernet, and the savoury, dark chocolate notes of the region. Plenty to chew on at this price.

Classic Australian pairing of Shiraz and Cabernet from the equally classic and distinctive McLaren Vale region that drips with dark berry and chocolatey fruit richness and spice. Winemaker with all the cred Ben Glaetzer knows how to extract that extra level of power, complexity and depth in his wines and considering the price point, this is bloody amazing. Throw in one of the best vintages for some time and a hefty 14.9 per cent alcohol and you’ve got an out-and-out winner on your hands. Get on it!

It’s been a few years since I’ve encountered ebullient Woodstock winemaker Scott Collett, or tasted any of his McLaren Vale wines, so I was pleased to see the 2010 reds in his “bistro series” are all impressive, although this classic blend was the one that particularly took my fancy. Collett and co-winemaking conspirator Ben Glaetzer have come up with a wine that is not only full in flavour, but offers very good value. The shiraz has provided juicy fruit and spice, the cabernet the tannin structure. From a very good vintage, this hits a sweet spot between bright fruit and savoury characters and would be terrific with winter dishes like lamb shanks, or goat souvlaki. It’ll probably cellar well for five or so years, as well.
