I visited Poggiobello in May 2012, it was an amazing tour, the diligence and passion they put into their wine making is inspiring and can be tasted in their wines.
Wine & Spirits, one of the most prestigious American publications, writes about Poggiobello in its issue of August 2012.
Poggiobello Estate derives its name from the location site, which is part of the “Colli orientali del Friuli” DOC (Eastern Hills of Friuli).
Vines and olive trees have been cultivated here for 2,000 years, since the ancient Roman times. In fact, the nearby town of Oleis derives its name from the Latin word for oil. Genagricola bought Poggiobello in 1974, and similarly to the other estates purchased, extensive improvements were performed.
The hills are now completely terraced and devoted to the original Friulan varietals: Picolit, Verduzzo Friulano, Merlot, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Tocai Friulano, Sauvignon, Ribolla Gialla, and Riesling.
Colli Orientali and nearby Collio are historically the two DOCs where the best Italian white wines are produced. This is a very special area which gives the wines produced here a weight and depth of flavour with an underlying minerality. not seen in the rest of Italy. A purity of flavour !
Balance, elegance and fragrance are the main aspects of Poggiobello wines.
The whites offer character along with delicate bouquets and aromatic tones.
The reds are fruity, soft, and velvety but also structured and decisive.
