Langmeil THE FREEDOM 1843, 2007 Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia.

Langmeil is home to THE FREEDOM Shiraz, planted in 1843 by the original vigneron Christian Auricht, vines which survive to this day. Escaping war and persecution in Prussia, Auricht travelled to his new homeland, from Persecution to Freedom to establish Langmeil.

Langmeil is given the highest James Halliday award 5 Star Plus, James Halliday's 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

For the eight consecutive year Langmeil Winery has retained its Five Red Star rating in James Hallidays Australian Wine Companion, placing it in the top 5% of premium Australian winemakers. A Five Red Star rating indicates an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity re-affirming Langmeil's status as one of Australia's finest producers.

The Freedom 1843 vineyard is Langmeil's rarest and finest Old Vine Garden. The Freedom, Langmeil's original vineyard, was planted to Shiraz in 1843 by our first vigneron Christian Auricht and his family. Not only has this treasured vineyard survived, but it has thrived in deep alluvial soil alongside the River Para adjacent to Langmeil's cellars. We believe The Freedom 1843 to be the oldest Shiraz vines not only in Barossa and Australia, but worldwide.

These 164 year old vines have survived droughts, floods, bushfires and man-made disasters like the infamous Government 'Vine Pull' scheme, and are the heart and soul of Langmeil and the Barossa. Time, tide and fortune have smiled on this most special of old Vine Gardens. Langmeil's Old Vine Gardens are treated as national treasures and are all hand tended, from pruning to harvesting.

We then employ traditional hands-on winemaking; gentle de-stemming, open fermentation and basket pressing into new (63%) and seasoned (37%) French oak barrels for two years, without fining or filtration, before bottling under screw cap to capture the essence of the vineyard.

This wine is the 11th consecutive vintage of The Freedom 1843 that has been bottled as an individual Old Vine Garden wine and will benefit from decanting and cellaring as have previous vintages.

Paul Lindner is the Family Winemaker.

The Lindner family of Langmeil Winery has been immersed in the Barossa's culture of farmimg, food, wine and community for six generations. Their commitment to quality in all aspects is unwavering and any wine that bears the Langmeil name represents their family's pursuit of excellence in wine and community.
