Chateau Palmer Margaux France 2005

Awesome. Showstopping. Remarkable. Palmer is all of these things in 2005. A stunning, full bodied expansive beauty of a wine, it would be hard to find a Left Bank wine as aromatically seductive as this. It is quintessentially Margaux with a Pomerol-like richness.

Ch. Palmer, Bordeaux 2005 [75cl] France

Awesome. Showstopping. Remarkable. Palmer is all of these things in 2005. A stunning, full bodied expansive beauty of a wine, it would be hard to find a Left Bank wine as aromatically seductive as this. It is quintessentially Margaux with a Pomerol-like richness. Made with more Cabernet Sauvignon than usual (53%), and 40% Merlot, the château takes its name from an English General who served under Wellington and arrived in Bordeaux with his army in 1814 before buying the property. Deep black cherries abound on the nose with a breathtaking blast of minerals and spice, and not a hint of oak. This is silky and gorgeous with unbelievably pure, firm and precise fruit on the palate. With multiple layers of complexity, the finish was so long we could still taste it - without any exaggeration - 15 minutes after leaving the château. The 78-year-old former winemaker said the only vintage to compare to the 2005 was the 1945 and in his view the 2005 surpassed the legends of 1961, 1983 and 1989 at the same stage. This is worth every penny. Drink 2015-2050.
Wine Spectator: 95-100/100 Robert Parker: 97

This spectacular offering should continue to improve, and may merit an even higher score after additional aging. Stunningly rich and powerful, the dark purple-tinged 2005 Palmer is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. Aromas of incense, burning embers, black currants, plums, licorice, and flowers are followed by a full-bodied Margaux with more weight and power even than its nearby first-growth rival, Chateau Margaux. The abundant acidity and tannins are beautifully coated by the wine’s exceptional fruit extract and overall harmony and richness. It is so concentrated that one is hard pressed to find even a hint of new oak. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2045+ Score: 97 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), May 2008

Classed as a 3rd Growth in 1855, Château Palmer consistently outperforms its ranking and is universally considered as one of the Médoc's finest wines. Recognised for its outstanding quality by top tasters all over the world, Palmer is a rare and much sought after wine. The Sichel Family are co-owners of Château Palmer.
