    The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) qualification covers the different wine styles, sales of wine, service of wines, service temperature, the hospitality of wine and a section on food and wine pairing.

  • Celebrate Malbec World Day


    Did you know that today is Malbec World Day? Probably not. It dates back only to 2011, and was inspired rather a long way off, in Argentina. It is a homage to the grape variety now earning the South American nation its own place on the world wine stage.

    It's a hard-won distinction. The Malbec vine was introduced from its native France into Argentina in 1853. Domingo Sarmiento, governor of the Mendoza province, then as now the principal vineyard region, is said to have authorised the first plantings on April 17 of that year.

    Sarmiento was a liberal intellectual at a time of mindless macho politics in Argentina, and 15 years later became the country's president. This gives some pretext for calling the Malbec a legacy grape, and the nation's enterprising winemakers have sensibly seized upon it.

  • WOW signed Woodstock The Stocks Shiraz just in!

    The 2006 release of Woodstock's single vineyard Stocks Shiraz sports a new, redesigned white label.


    The Shiraz fruit comes from 31 rows of low-yielding north facing century old vines planted on sandy soils at Woodstock Estate. Each ancient vine only yields about three bottles of "The Stocks" per year.

    After 18 months in French oak it's rather oaky but very pleasant and classy, opening to a pronounced fragrance of lovely nutty/cedar/vanilla and walnut oak, supported by regional fruit undertones of red plum and blackberries. Smooth  and vibrant, its medium-bodied palate is beautifully long, announcing a more savoury finish with a pliant extract of grainy tannins and handsome oak overlapping its vivid red/dark fruit flavours. Despite its substantial alcohol there are no  signs of over ripeness, and it's a lot classier than many from the Vale. Drink to 2018.
